Rezone Hudson Square: Re-envisioning One of New York’s Gems in Lower Manhattan

Covering 50 acres over 20 blocks, Hudson Square is situated in the lower west side of Manhattan, just north of TriBeCa. Although it’s home to many of the top technology and creative companies in the city, the area’s zoning was restricted to commercial and manufacturing uses. In order to grow and thrive, Hudson Square needed to transform from its industrial past into a vibrant, 24/7 mixed use neighborhood with commercial, cultural, and residential energy. Trinity Real Estate, the non-profit real estate arm of NYC’s Trinity Church, partnered with GSG to execute a public affairs campaign to rezone Hudson Square.

GSG’s campaign included grassroots outreach, third-party engagement, media relations and digital support. The campaign gained critical backing from press, citywide organizations, community leaders, local residents and businesses. On March 20, 2013, the NYC Council approved the rezoning 50-1 – making it the largest rezoning project by a private applicant in NYC history.
